Don’t drink in public areas

09 Jan 2017

JOHOR BARU: The police and local council are teaming up to curb drinking in public areas including parks and playgrounds.

This follows complaints from the public that drinkers create a public nuisance, litter the area with beer cans and bottles as well as relieve themselves along drains, house walls and even trees.

Their favourite spots include Stulang Laut, Jalan Meldrum and the city centre.

Johor Baru (South) OCPD Asst Comm Sulaiman Salleh said that drinking in public is an offence.

“You can only drink alcoholic beverages in licensed or private premises.

“Police will take action against those found to be intoxicated especially if they are driving a vehicle as they are a danger to themselves and other road users,” he said.

ACP Sulaiman added those found to be driving or riding while under the influence of alcohol will be charged under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

The offence carries a jail term of up to 10 years and a maximum fine of RM20,000 if found guilty.

ACP Sulaiman added that the police would be cooperating with the Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) to ensure people do not drink alcoholic beverages in the open.

Meanwhile, Johor Baru mayor A. Rahim Nin said MBJB had placed several of its enforcement personnel at places where people like to drink openly.

“For example, in Stulang Laut, we have stationed up to five of our enforcement personnel who will be making their rounds daily.

“Individuals caught drinking alcoholic beverages would be asked to leave the area,” he said.
